A police officer was killed in the line of duty on Monday evening while trailing a suspected DUI motorist on South Cobb Drive in Smyrna, Georgia. The accident reports provided by the Smyrna Police department confirmed that the officer was struck beside a parking lot at about 11:20 pm on April 20.

According to the reports, the female attendant of a nearby gas station, who pleaded anonymity, heard the crash and placed a call to 911 immediately to report the situation.

Responding officers found the deputy unresponsive in a mangled car, with several people present at the parking lot trying to rescue him from the wreck to no avail.

Investigators gathered that the mishap began when an on-duty police officer, identified as Christopher Ewing, 34, sighted a driver whom he suspected was under the influence.

The officer activated his blue lights and sirens to make the alleged drunk driver pull over. However, the motorist failed to oblige the officer, pushing forward instead until his Chevrolet Tahoe slammed into the police vehicle.

The Georgia State Patrol reports asserted that Officer Ewing was southbound on the roadway, while the suspect was traveling north. The suspect struck the patrol car just as he attempted a left turn. The impact forced the cruiser into a nearby parking lot at a gas station located at the intersection of South Cobbs and Oak drive.

Emergency responders extricated the officer from the wreck and pronounced him dead.

The operator of the Tahoe, identified as Robert Cox, was also injured and was transported to Wellstar kennestone Hospital for treatment, according to the accident reports.

Following his discharge, he was detained without bond at the Cobb Jail on charges of felony DUI and vehicular homicide, both of first degree.
