No fewer than three casualties were recorded on Wednesday, April 22, in Gregg County, Texas, after an 18-wheeler crashed into a concrete barrier, wrecking two other automobiles in the process. Accident reports provided by the Gregg County authorities on Wednesday, April 22, named three of the victims as Yves Renard, Deontez Womack, and Joseph Evans.
Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety were deployed to the crash site on IH-20, two miles east of Kilgore, shortly after it was called in.
Responding officers discovered that at least six people were involved in the three-vehicle crash, three of whom critically injured.
Investigators determined that a Volvo 18-wheeler pulling a semi-trailer was westbound on Interstate 20 amid a heavy downpour.
For reasons yet unknown, the Volvo struck a concrete barrier on the freeway, which caused it to lose control and spiral to the left, where it collided with two passing vehicles.
The 18-wheeler again struck the concrete barrier on the left shoulder of the roadway. As a result, the semi-trailer it was towing dislodged and broke through the barrier, skidding down the embankment violently.
The big rig halted only after plunging into a pool of water in a creek and sinking to the bottom. The driver, Yves Renard, 48, of Florida, died at the scene.
One of the vehicles involved was a Nissan Titan, driven by Deontez Womack, 32, of Louisiana, who suffered serious injuries in the crash. He, along with a passenger, Joseph Evans, 19, of Houston, was transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center. Another 19-year-old passenger, Johntavious Gray, was not seriously injured.
