Authorities have identified the man killed last week after his helicopter spun out of control and crashed in Mesa, Arizona. The Mesa Police Department, in accident reports released on Sunday, April 26, named the fatal victim as 55-year-old Chip Paige.
The ghastly incident took place in the afternoon of Friday, April 24, in the area of US600 and Stapley, as reported by the Mesa authorities.
Evidence collected at the scene of the wreck, backed by eyewitness accounts and the state of the crashed aircraft, determined that parts of the helicopter dislodged while in flight, which resulted in the accident.
The Bell “Huey” UH-1H chopper was reportedly en route Falcon Field Airport from Blythe when the wreckage kicked off for reasons yet to be established. As a result, the craft lost control and crashed onto the grounds of US600 and Stapley, causing damages to other properties within the vicinity.
Aside from the properties damaged by debris from the crashed helicopter, no human present on the ground at the time was hurt.
The pilot of the aircraft, identified as Albert Hayden, suffered minor injuries in the wreck and was taken to an area hospital, while Paige, who was the sole passenger in the chopper, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident reports affirmed that Paige, who was previously in charge of the helicopter program at the station for seven years until 2009, died from major lacerations suffered on various parts of his body.
