Leonardo Banos Arrested Following Death of Bicyclist, Felix Mayer, in Sandy Springs

A man is faced with hit-and-run charges following the death of a cyclist in a vehicle-versus-bicycle collision in Sandy Springs, Georgia. The suspect was detained by the Sandy Springs Police on Saturday, April 25, and would require the services of an experienced car accident lawyer.

The fatal collision was reported at about 6 pm on the said day. According to the reports, the crash played out along Glenridge Drive, north of Interstate 285.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the bicycle rider, identified as Felix Mayer, 57, of Dunwoody, was traveling northbound on Glenridge Drive.

While in transit, a white pickup truck also heading north on the Glenridge tragically struck the bicycle from behind, knocking the cyclist and the bike to the ground. Mayer suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

The motorist did not wait to assist the struck cyclist but fled the crash site before the police arrived. Officers determined that the operator of the pickup truck, whose name was disclosed as 42-year-old Leonardo Angulo Banos, was using his cellphone at the time of the accident.

Troopers later apprehended the suspect after sighting him near Hope and Roswell roads. His pickup was taken as evidence.

Banos was arrested on charges of distracted driving, first-degree vehicular homicide, felony hit-and-run, failure to maintain lane, and reckless driving.

Additional charges may be filed against the suspect, pending the results of the investigations conducted by the Sandy Springs Police Department.

Anyone involved in a car accident is advised to seek legal counsel from a car accident lawyer before proceeding further in the case.
