Two people were killed Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 94 near Deerfield, authorities reported.
Christopher Lopez, 29, of Bronx, N.Y., and Roberta Harris, 29, of Chicago, both died from injuries sustained in the wreck, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Lopez’ second passenger and the drivers of the other two vehicles involved in the wreck – both semi-tractor trailers – also were hurt in the incident, car accident reports state.
Authorities said Lopez was driving a vehicle east on Interstate 94 near Half Day Road sometime after 10 a.m. Tuesday when he sideswiped a semi, which also was headed east. Lopez lost control of his SUV, causing it to strike a second semi that also was eastbound on the interstate.
Lopez and Harris, his passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to car accident reports. Authorities said another passenger, whom they did not name publicly, suffered major injuries in the incident.
The semi drivers, neither of whom were publicly identified by authorities, were transported to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Car accident reports state investigators worked on the scene for several hours. The eastbound lanes of the interstate reportedly were closed until after 3 p.m.
Coroner’s office officials said toxicology results are pending. Investigators did not say whether they suspect factors like speed, inattentive driving or intoxication contributed to the crash.
