Police on Tuesday identified the victim of a fatal hit-and-run that happened on April 24.

According to accident reports, the collision involved an 18-wheeler and a car.  It resulted in the quarantine of 11 first responders after a survivor tested positive for COVID-19.

The deceased is 25-year-old Ramon De Loera Hernandez of Bellmead.

He died at the scene of the crash which took place at the corner of Idylwood Lane and East Loop 340 around 8:30 p.m.

It took nearly an hour for firefighters to free the second person who was in the car with Hernandez. They had to use a heavy-duty wrecker to remove the tractor from the front of the sedan.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition and he was later diagnosed with the novel coronavirus. His name won’t be released because of privacy concerns.

Three of the firefighters who rescued the man have been under quarantine at a local hotel. They are not displaying any symptoms and City of Waco officials confirmed that they will return to work on Friday.

Meanwhile, Waco police officials said six police officers and two crime scene technicians were quarantined as a precautionary measure.

Police said they had identified the driver of the 18-wheeler, but he was not in custody. He ran away after the crash.

Hernandez’s family could seek the services of a truck accident lawyer depending on the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Waco Assistant City Manager Ryan Holt said the quarantined firefighters and officers have not created any difficulties for their departments. He said the city has a continuity plan designed for situations in which officers are sick or injured.

When the name of the truck driver is released, it will be provided in subsequent accident reports.
