State of Illinois officials said three Mississippi residents were seriously injured Monday afternoon in a single-vehicle wreck in Union County.
Robert Criss, 58, and his passengers, Hildarea Criss, 38, and Frederick Baker, 54, all residents of Louise, Miss., suffered serious injuries in the wreck, according to the Illinois State Police. Car accident reports describe the severity of the motorists’ wounds as “life-threatening.”
Troopers said Robert Criss was driving south on Interstate 57 near mile marker 35 just before 1 p.m. Monday when he lost control of his vehicle. Robert Criss drove off the road and overcorrected, causing his vehicle to roll end over end, according to car accident reports.
The vehicle eventually came to rest off the roadway and caught fire, troopers said. All three occupants of the vehicle were able to extricate themselves before emergency responders arrived on scene.
Robert and Hildarea Criss were airlifted from the scene to an area hospital for treatment of major injuries, according to car accident reports. Baker also suffered serious injuries, but he was transported to a hospital via ambulance.
Updated condition reports weren’t available Tuesday evening.
Troopers said the southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for about one hour while investigators worked on scene. Car accident reports available Tuesday don’t say whether investigators believe speed, inattentive driving or intoxication were contributing factors in the wreck.
No charges or citations have been announced. The investigation is ongoing by the Illinois State Police.
