An on-duty police officer suffered injuries in a highway crash after a moving vehicle rear-ended his patrol cruiser in Hapeville, Georgia. According to the accident reports obtained from the Hapeville Police Department, the incident occurred on Tuesday, May 12.
The crash happened at about 12:40 p.m. on Interstate 85, near Sylvan Road, the reports confirmed. A Hapeville Police Officer, identified as Brandon Hickman, and two other victims turned out as casualties in the traffic wreck.
Officer Hickman was on the driver’s seat of a patrol cruiser, parked on the right shoulder of the freeway when a Lexus SUV hit him. Police said prior to the crash, the motorist that struck the officer was traveling on the left lane of I-85.
The car suddenly spiralled out of control, went across three lanes of travel and veered into the northbound lanes, onto the right shoulder where it struck Hickman’s cruiser and overturned. The impact of the collision pushed the patrol car forward until it collided into the rear of another vehicle which the officer pulled over earlier.
The man lost consciousness as a result. A motorist, who was driving past the location at the time and witnessed the incident pulled over and rescued the unresponsive lawman from the wreck.
After reviving the victim, medics transported him to Grady Memorial Hospital’s trauma unit for treatment. The two occupants of the vehicle the cruiser rear-ended also suffered injuries, and emergency responders transported them to the hospital.
24-year-old Myame Quiovers of College Park, who was driving the overturned SUV went unscathed and declined medical attention, the accident reports asserted.
Officers later took him into custody on suspicion of speeding, driving too fast for conditions, not wearing a seatbelt, and operating an unsafe vehicle. In addition, he faces charges of reckless driving, improper lane change, violating Georgia’s Move Over law, failure to maintain lane and driving in violation of a limited permit.
