A horrific crash in Brunswick, Georgia has dealt a family a double blow, according to accident reports.
Thirty-five-year-old Cecilia Maxwell died at the scene of the accident at Selden Park and Newcastle Street on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, her husband Matthew Maxwell is in critical condition at Jacksonville’s UF Health Hospital where he was taken by helicopter.
The couple has two teenage children. One of them, 13-year-old Matthew Jr. was in the vehicle when the crash occurred, but he suffered only minor injuries.
On a GoFundMe page set up to assist Matthew and his 16-year-old sister Emma, family members said the 38-year-old Matthew Sr. is not expected to survive.
Hospital spokesman Dan Leveton could not confirm whether he was on life support.
A family friend revealed that the children are staying with an aunt.
The Georgia State Patrol said Matthew Sr. was driving and he suffered a medical emergency that caused him to lose consciousness and then lose control of his Nissan Rogue.
This happened around 11:09 p.m. as the family traveled along Fourth Street and approached Newcastle Street.
According to accident reports, the vehicle hit a large tree and overturned near the Ross Road entrance to Selden Park.
The GoFundMe campaign has a target of $20,000 which is intended to assist with meeting Michael Jr. and Emma’s basic needs. As of Friday night, $9,455 had been raised.
GSP’s specialized reconstruction team is looking into the crash.
More than 1,500 die each year on Georgia’s roads.
