Arturo Barrio Killed in Tucson Auto-Pedestrian Accident

Maria Perez

The Tucson Police Department identified the pedestrian killed in an accident in Tucson, Arizona. On Wednesday, July 22nd, they released the victim’s name as Arturo Felipe Barrio Jr., 24.

The accident report showed that the collision happened late Tuesday, July 21st, a little after 10 p.m. at the intersection of Broadway Boulevard and Swan Road. The police said that Barrio was crossing Swan in a crosswalk against a traffic signal when a northbound Jeep struck him.

The man succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the vehicle stayed and cooperated with the investigation. A DUI officer with the PPD determined that the motorist was not under the influence of an intoxicant at the time of the crash.

Also, speed does not appear to be a factor. The investigation is ongoing, and the conclusion would determine if there would be charges.

Auto-pedestrian accidents are not uncommon, and they occur for several reasons. They include drivers going too fast, failing to stop at intersections, failing to yield to pedestrians, pedestrians crossing outside designated crosswalks, and walking on busy roadways instead of sticking to sidewalks.

Drivers and pedestrians should work together to mitigate these factors by practicing safe road habits. The former should maintain the speed limit in school, residential, and business districts, yield the way to pedestrians, obey traffic lights and stop signs, and slowly back out of driveways. The latter should wear bright colors, use flashlights when walking at dusk or dawn, cross within crosswalks, and avoid jaywalking.
