Erin Covarrubias Killed in Phoenix Accident by Hit-and-Run Driver

The Phoenix Police Department is actively searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a pedestrian on Monday, August 3rd, in Phoenix, Arizona. The accident report disclosed the victim’s name as Erin Covarrubias, 17.

The PPD said that at about 11:50 p.m., they responded to a report of a car crashing into a pedestrian near 103rd Avenue and Buckeye Road. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found Covarrubias lying on the roadway and pronounced her dead.

A preliminary investigation informed the police that the teenager was walking along the way when a vehicle hit her. The driver failed to stop at the scene or render help to the victim. The investigators currently have no information on the motorist or the vehicle involved, and anyone with information should contact the Phoenix Police or use the Silent Witness helpline.

Under Arizona vehicle accident laws, drivers involved in an accident have a duty to remain at the crash scene, exchange information, and display a driver’s license upon request. If the collision involves injury, the motorist must render reasonable assistance, coordinate medical transportation, and give notice to law enforcement.

If the person strikes an unattended parked vehicle, he or she must immediately stop and locate the owner. If the owner is unavailable, the motorist must leave a note that provides his or her name, address, insurance information, and driver’s license information. Drivers who fail to obey this rule are liable to criminal prosecution and possible imprisonment if found guilty.
