Raymond Murrell, 27, of the Bloomingdale Police Department, was killed in a car accident Thursday night while responding to a crime.
Murrell, who was in his first year on the force, crashed at approximately 9:30 p.m. He was the only person in his vehicle, a police SUV with its lights on at the time of the crash, and no other cars were involved.
The crash occurred at Army Trail Road and Cardinal Avenue. The cause of the accident is unknown, although it is believed that rainy weather may have been a factor. Murrell was responding to a call about a theft in a store when he crashed.
Murrell, who is the first Bloomingdale police officer to die on the job, had cherished an ambition to join the force all his life. Previously, he had been commended for his service after he helped to save the life of a person who was having a heart attack.
