A DeKalb County police officer struck and killed a pedestrian, Charlie Aaron Mitchell, 66, while he was crossing a busy street in Tucker, Georgia. Accident reports state that the incident occurred on Thursday, May 14, at about 10:30 p.m. near Wendy’s on Hugh Howell Road.
The police officer was identified as Sergeant Charles Cole. Investigations revealed that he was driving west in his police SUV when the pedestrian tried to cross the street.
The police officer struck the pedestrian, killing him. The authorities said that Mitchell tried crossing the road outside of a designated crosswalk. Sergeant Cole told investigators that he never saw the man.
A spokeswoman for the DeKalb Police, Michaela Vincent, in a written statement, said that all questions about the incident should be directed to the State Patrol, which is handling the investigations. She, however, said that the DKPD placed Sergeant Cole on administrative leave and that it will fully comply with the investigation.
As a result of the crash, authorities shut down Hugh Howell Road between Lawrenceville Highway and Mountain Industrial Boulevard for hours. Reports said that a pair of shoes presumed to belong to the victim was seen in the middle of the street.
Meanwhile, authorities towed the SUV that Cole was driving away and reopened the road at about 3 a.m. on Friday. The Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
Pedestrians should keep to the crosswalks designated for them when crossing the road. They must not enter into the road nonchalantly. According to accident reports, many crashes occur when pedestrians enter into roads without looking out for oncoming vehicles.
