A two-vehicle auto collision on Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville, Georgia, left one person dead and the other uninjured. The Georgia State Patrol on Thursday, March 4th, confirmed the identity of the deceased.
Matthew Novotny, 24, of Dahlonega, died in a car wreck in which he started the chain of events leading to it. The accident occurred on Wednesday, March 4th, on Thompson Bridge Road/Ga. 60 north of Tomacheche Trail.
The GSP in a press briefing stated that the deceased was heading north in a Dodge Shadow on the above roadway when he failed to maintain his lane. The right wheels of the vehicle he was driving entered the right shoulder of the road, and Novotny tried to correct it.
The young man overcorrected the vehicle, sending it into a counterclockwise rotation as it entered into the northbound lane of Ga. 60. An oncoming tractor-trailer truck — belonging to Fieldale Farms — driven by Alan Garcia, 36, of Murrayville, then struck the Dodge on the right side.
The impact of the collision sent the two vehicles off the road, and they traveled down an embankment on the west side of Ga. 60. Novotny’s car struck a tree with its left side, alongside the truck, and they both came to a final rest.
The young man died at the spot, and Garcia came out unscathed. The wreck was reported at about 11:48 a.m., and it led to delayed traffic on the roadway.
Drivers heading south were redirected onto Elrod Road, while those heading north used Hopewell Church Road. The GSP led the investigation into the crash, and there will be no charges against Garcia.
