A resident of Atlanta, Georgia was detained on Monday afternoon after hitting a vehicle conveying a family of three, and zooming off without stopping at the site despite appeals from the vehicle occupants. The traffic incident took place just after midday on Monday, March 16.
Reports confirmed that the mishap occurred in the Atlanta Suburb of Marietta and involved the arrested motorist and a family consisting of two black women and their one-year-old godson.
The women, whose names were disclosed as Asia Lewis and Kimberly Carter, along with the toddler, were reportedly heading home after a family outing when the motorist struck their vehicle, knocking off their side-view mirror.
The offending driver refused to pullover but continued driving even after the woman called his attention to the damage done to their vehicle.
According to the damaged vehicle occupants, the Atlantan man threatened them with a gun after they signalled him in a bid to get his insurance information.
Lewis and Carter took the case to the city’s police authorities, who eventually identified the escaped motorist as Steven Abbot, a 59-year-old resident of Atlanta. A call was made to the traffic offender to confirm the women’s accounts.
The vehicle driver denied knowing the victims but later implied that he declined their request to pullover because they were black, as heard in a recording from the 911 call. He went on to accuse them of making vulgar comments about his family heritage, allegations which the victimised godmothers have since denied.
Police arrived at the 59-year-old’s residence shortly after, and arrested him on charges of misdemeanour hit-and-run and threatening with a gun. He was later released on bond.
