The Columbus Police Department took a man into custody on Tuesday in connection with a deadly hit and run accident.
The original accident occurred in January of last year. LaAntoneus Moses was found dead at the scene of the hit-and-run incident. At the time, the driver who struck Moses fled the scene of the accident.
That driver, 35-year-old Eddie Riggins, was arrested and charged on February 21 with six charges in connection with the fatal accident.
LaAntoneus Moses’ aunt and caretaker, Billie Ann Mallory, recalled what her nephew was like. She reported that although he had a learning disability, he never let that interfere with his personality.
“He was classified with a learning disability as far as comprehension, but he was outgoing, not a stranger, and loved to meet people,” Mallory said.
Mallory was shocked that driver’s mother turned Riggins in. Riggins mother and Mallory were high school classmates. “We graduated together,” Mallory said.
In a phone call filled with tears, Mallory learned of the arrest. Mallory described that morning as bittersweet.
Mallory shared that it was especially bitter to find out that the driver knew the person he had struck. But even after all of those emotions, Mallory said the closure feels good.
