A 23-year-old man was seriously injured when he was thrown from his motorcycle during a collision in northwest Cobb city on Wednesday.
Police said Errol J. Simms of Acworth was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta following the crash which occurred shortly before 2 p.m. at the junction of Cowan Road and Cowan Connector in Acworth.
The other vehicle involved in the crash was driven by 76-year-old Ludene G. Harris, also a resident of Acworth. A press release from Cobb County Police Department spokesman Sergeant Wayne Delk said she was not seriously injured.
Delk said investigators determined that Simms was heading south on Cowan Road and approaching the Cowan Connector junction when his black 2018 Yamaha YZFR3 motorcycle collided with a brown 2018 Toyota Corolla heading northbound on Cowan Road. Harris was turning left onto the Cowan Connector.
Simms was ejected when the two vehicles collided. No further details have been released about his injuries.
Officials didn’t say whether Simms was wearing a helmet when the collision occurred.
However, Georgia’s laws require motorcycle riders and passengers to wear protective headgear whenever they operate a motorcycle. They are also required to wear protective eyewear or have the motorcycle outfitted with a windshield.
Delk said Cobb County police are helping officers from the City of Acworth with the ongoing investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the accident or has information on what occurred is asked to call investigators on 770-499-3987.
Figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal that 5,172 motorcyclists died on Georgia’s roads in 2017.
