Evelyn Delores Nowell Sentenced to Prison and Probation for Interstate 75 Fatal Crash

Bartow County, Georgia, has finally gotten justice with the sentencing of the woman who triggered the fatal crash that occurred on Interstate 75 in 2018. Evelyn Delores Nowell, 73, of Cedartown, bagged a prison sentence and probation on Tuesday, March 24th.

Nowell pleaded guilty before Judge Jeff Watkins in the morning and was sentenced to five years imprisonment. The court took the time she has been locked up — since 2018 — into consideration and split the sentence in two.

The woman would spend one more year in prison, and then four years of probation upon her release. Nowell was charged with vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and stopping on the roadway.

The 2018 accident led to the death of Bobbie Whitman, 56, and severely injured Robert Whitman, 49, both of Emerson. The accident report by the Georgia State Patrol showed Nowell stopped her car on the interstate near Groovers Landing Overpass.

The act caused a tractor-trailer to swerve in an attempt to avoid her, and the driver ended up hitting the vehicle carrying Bobbie and Emerson. There is no information on what happened to the driver of the trailer.

Stopping on the roadway is a traffic offense in Georgia. The parking laws of the state tells drivers where to park and where not to, to avoid creating situations that lead to accidents.

Some of the parking positions not allowed in Georgia is double parking, that is parking on the side of a vehicle that stopped or parked on the curb. Drivers are not allowed to leave their cars on the sidewalk or within an intersection.

Drivers can’t park on a crosswalk or railroad tracks, within safety zones, or within 30 feet of the end of the safety zone.
