An Athens officer sustained major injuries over the weekend following a bizarre encounter with an alleged DUI motorist in Athens, Georgia. According to the accident reports, the incident took place at night on Sunday, April 26.
The encounter began at about 9 pm in Preserve Drive, where the deputy in question was reportedly on patrol duty. As reported, Officer Torie Teets sighted a motorist driving erratically while patrolling the area in a Dodge Cruiser. The officer swung into action and tried to get the 2003 Nissan Altima to pull over.
A spokesperson for the Athens-Clarke County police, Lt. John Radford divulged in a press release that Teets cleared to the side of the road for fear of being hit, before turning on her emergency lights to flag down the Nissan.
The motorist, however, failed to oblige but kept moving until he crashed into another vehicle and struck the curb before halting. Following the collision, the hood of the car began emitting smoke, prompting the cop to alight her cruiser and rush to aid the motorist.
The driver, Frank Reyes, who was seemingly unresponsive at first, suddenly regained consciousness just as Torie Teets tried to rescue him from the vehicle. He then started the car and fled the scene, dragging the officer alongside the car for miles until she was dislodged.
The deputy sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the encounter and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Reyes was eventually intercepted by other officers and detained on charges of aggravated assault on an officer, evading police, failure to maintain lane, hit-and-run, and DUI. He is also faced with charges of driving without a valid license, driving with a canceled registration, and no insurance. The suspect was booked into the Clarke County Jail, as confirmed in the accident reports.
