A small plane landed at Daniel Field Airport in West Augusta ran off the runway and crashed into a fence on Sunday February 23. The pilot has been identified at Robert Stuntz.
After taking off from Augusta Regional Airport in South Augusta just minutes before, the plane landed just after 2 p.m. and was unable to stop. According to Augusta Fire Department Officials, the plane continued along the runway of Daniel Field before hitting a fence across Highland Avenue and eventually coming to an abrupt stop.
When found, the pilot was conscious with minor injuries. Stuntz was taken to a local hospital for observation.
According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Stuntz told authorities he was traveling eastbound across the airport, when he experienced engine failure. He said he was coming in to land at the time and the engine failed, rendering him unable to stop after touching down on the runway.
Stuntz reported that the aircraft then broke through the east perimeter fence near Highland Avenue and pulled the fence to the other side of Highland Avenue, where the aircraft came to an abrupt stop. A car traveling south on Highland Avenue was struck by the fence. The name of that driver, who sustained no injuries, has yet to be released. Highland Avenue was shut down for hours on Sunday.
Stuntz was flying a Beechcraft 58P aircraft registered to local business Eagle Parts & Products.
At this time, the circumstances and purpose of the flight are unknown.
