A teenage girl is dead and two other young people are nursing injuries following a single-vehicle crash along Napier Avenue early on Monday.
In a release, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said the accident happened in the area of Habersham Avenue around 1:40 a.m.
The crash forced the closure of the road while workers cleared up the wreckage and investigators worked. However, the road reopened to traffic around 5 a.m.
The release said deputies spotted a Nissan Sentra runnning a light on Park Street as it turned left onto Napier Avenue. The driver drove off down the avenue at a high speed when deputies tried to pull over the car.
According to Sergeant Clay Williams, the driver lost control of the vehicle, ran off the road, brushed a utility pole, and flipped.
All the passengers were ejected when the car flipped. Two unknown suspects fled while three juveniles remained at the scene. One of them, 14-year-old Shakayla Hill, was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
A juvenile male and another young girl were taken to the Medical Center at Navicent Health for treatment. Both were listed in stable condition.
The crash left sheet metal and car parts scattered along the road.
The street between Glynn and Hillcrest Avenues was closed including Habersham Avenue.
The car had been reported stolen on February 12.
Anyone who has information on the wreck has been asked to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500.
