The residents of Toombs County, Lyons, Georgia, are mourning the loss of one of their promising soccer stars, Julio Almanza, 16. The young man passed away following an accident on Tuesday, March 3rd.
The Georgia State Patrol stated in a press release that Almanza was involved in a single-vehicle crash on the eastbound lanes of Airport Road. He was traveling in a 2015 Ford Mustang that ran off the roadway and hit a tree.
The vehicle was driven by an unnamed 17-year-old, with the deceased as the only passenger. Almanza died at the scene, while the driver, who sustained significant injuries, was flown to Memorial Hospital in Savannah for treatment.
The police have not uncovered why the vehicle the teenagers were traveling in crashed. They have also not stated if drugs and alcohol played a role, and at the time of this report, it seems unlikely.
Once the police released Almanza as the deceased person in the crash, the President of the Toombs County Soccer Association, Fletcher Corbin, released a statement, describing the teenager as someone genuine and selfless.
The death of Almanza, who was an integral part of his community and the soccer team, shook the association. Corbin said he exuded an environment of security when he was present, and challenged others to be their best.
The young man also played football and acted as a leader and friend to his team and school mates. The police are still investigating the accident, and for now, the driver of the vehicle has not been charged with an offense.
