Girl Killed, Tyrese Crawford Injured In Alton Crash Involving Suspected Stolen Car

A teen girl was killed and three other people were injured Friday afternoon when a police chase involving a suspected stolen vehicle ended in a violent crash near Alton, according to authorities.

Illinois State Police thus far have identified the person who died only as a 17-year-old girl from Cahokia. Also injured were the vehicle’s driver, a 16-year-old girl from Alton, and two passengers, a 17-year-old boy from Belleville and Tyrese M. Crawford, 20, of East St. Louis, according to car accident reports.

Alton police said they spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of St. Louis heading south on Washington Avenue at about 1:15 p.m. Friday. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but it sped off, according to car accident reports.

The driver eventually lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into a utility pole and rollover, police said.

Emergency responders airlifted the 17-year-old girl, a passenger in the vehicle, to a St. Louis hospital, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries, according to car accident reports.  Crawford, the other passenger and the driver sustained injuries that aren’t believed to be life-threatening.

The incident remains under investigation. It is still unclear whether intoxicants, like drugs or alcohol, might have contributed to the wreck, according to car accident reports.

No citations or charges have been announced thus far. However, investigators said they will consult with area prosecutors about potential charges.
