Andrzej Poprawa 1 Of 3 People Killed In Wreck On Interstate Near Mattoon

Authorities have identified one of three people killed Thursday afternoon in a six-vehicle wreck on Interstate 57 near Mattoon.

Andrzej Poprawa, 50, of Palm Coast, Fla., was killed as a result of the crash, according to the Coles County Coroner’s Office. Car accident reports available Friday do not yet list the names of the other two people who were killed in the incident.

The Illinois State Police reported that a driver heading north on Interstate 57 near Mattoon at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday apparently did not notice a traffic stoppage in the road. The driver struck the rear of a stopped vehicle, setting off a serious chain-reaction crash, according to car accident reports.

All told, four vehicles and two semi-tractor trailers were involved in the crash. Poprawa, who was driving one of the semis, was one of three people who were killed, the coroner’s office reported.

Troopers have released few details about the wreck, one of two serious crashes on the stretch of Interstate 57 on Thursday afternoon. It is unclear if the others killed were passengers or drivers or whether they were occupants of the semis or the other vehicles involved.

The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police. They have not said whether they suspect the involvement of factors like the use of intoxicants or excessive speed.

No charges or citations have been announced in connection to the incident and it is unclear whether any are expected.
