Jose Garcia-Trujillo

An elected official from Morgan County died early Friday morning in a single-vehicle wreck near Jacksonville, according to local authorities.

Forty-nine-year-old Jenny Geirnaeirt, of Jacksonville, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred at about 6:30 a.m. Friday, the Morgan County Coroner’s Office reported. No other vehicles were involved and no additional injuries were listed on car accident reports available Friday afternoon.

Authorities said the crash occurred at about 6:30 a.m. Friday on Old State Road near Walbaum Lane. Few details about the crash and the events immediately preceding were included on car accident reports.

Morgan County Coroner’s Office officials pronounced Geirnaeirt, the vehicle’s only occupant, dead at the scene of the wreck.

Geirnaeirt had served as Morgan County’s treasurer since her appointment in 2015. She was elected to a full term in 2018. She also previously served as an alderman for the City of Jacksonville for several years.

The incident remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department. Investigators have not said whether they suspect the involvement of contributing factors, such as road conditions or speed.

The coroner’s office released a statement after confirming Geirnaeirt’s death.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Jenny,” coroner’s office officials wrote in the statement. “This is a tremendous loss to their family and our entire community.”
