A woman lost her life in a fatal crash that also left two other persons with injuries on Tuesday, September 29. The deceased was identified by the Illinois State Police as Carolyn S. Marlow, 74, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

According to the details shared by the ISP, the fatal incident occurred on the Illinois Route 161 at some distance from the County Road 600. It involved two vehicles, identified as a Gray 2013 Toyota Prius and a Gray 2011 Chevrolet Impala.

Carolyn S. Marlow was a passenger in the Impala. Logan H. Marlow, 79, of Mt. Vernon was driving the vehicle at the time. The Impala was headed westbound along the Route 161. This was when the Prius, headed eastbound at the time, crossed the center line. The Prius then collided head-on with the Impala.

Carolyn sustained critical injuries in the collision. Once the first responders reached the scene of the crash, she was pronounced deceased on the spot. Logan also incurred life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment.

The driver of the Prius was identified by the ISP as John E. Hermeling, 56, of Centralia. Hermeling was also injured in the crash although his injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.

Preliminary investigations by the ISP revealed that Hermeling’s negligence contributed to the crash. Based on these initial findings, he was ticketed for improper lane usage. A section of the Route 161 remained closed for several hours following the crash.
