An elderly woman lost her life in a hit-and-run accident that happened on Tuesday, February 25. According to the known details of the accident, the victim of the unfortunate incident was one Regina M. Sariol, 63, of Schiller Park.
The accident happened when Sariol was attempting to cross the Irving Park Road on foot. As she attempted to make the crossing near the Atlantic Avenue, a silver Hyundai hit her. The initial hit propelled Sariol into the other lane where she was hit by a second vehicle. This second vehicle was a 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette Minivan.
Sariol was critically injured as a result of the hits. As the emergency personnel reached the site of the accident, she was pronounced dead. The driver of the first vehicle who hit Sariol remained on the site of the incident to cooperate with the police. However, the driver of the second vehicle who hit Sariol fled the scene. A subsequent effort by the authorities identified the driver as a Medinah man aged 64.
Investigations into the incident are still ongoing. It remains to be seen if the negligence of the drivers caused the accident or if the pedestrian victim was at fault. The second driver is also guilty of hit-and-run, so it is very likely that criminal charges may be brought up against him. For the first driver, the likelihood of any charges depends upon the verdict of negligence. If the pedestrian was to blame, the first driver may not face any charges.
