Jerry Otto Dies of Injuries from Buggy Crash

A man has lost his life due to the injuries caused in a buggy crash. He died on Tuesday, July 7 after being hospitalized for nearly three weeks. The buggy crash which injured him took place back on June 19 according to the accident reports. The man has been identified as Jerry Otto, 82, of Arcola.

According to the details shared by the authorities, Otto was traveling in a horse-drawn buggy when it ran into accident. He was riding the buggy close to 225 E. County Road 500 N. in Arthur when the buggy seems to have gone out of control.

It veered away from the road and then overturned in a ditch, causing severe injuries to Jerry Otto. He was taken to the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana where he remained under treatment for nearly three weeks. However, he couldn’t recover from his injuries and finally succumbed to them on July 7. He was pronounced dead by the Champaign County Coroner Duane Northup.

At this point, it is not clear exactly how or why the buggy derailed and entered the ditch, thereby causing Otto’s injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the incident to better understand the factors that contributed to it. Investigations are currently being led by Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Champaign County Coroner’s Office. Once the investigations conclude and detailed accident reports become available, it might become clear whether a problem with the buggy, a medical emergency with the passenger, a problem with the horses or any other factor caused the crash.
