Wednesday morning, February 12, was a busy morning for Interstate 55 in Worden. An accident occurred between two truck drivers at 5:41 a.m. The accident occurred in the northbound lanes.
This began the pattern for backed up traffic for the rest of the morning in Worden.
A 2018 International truck tractor-trailer semi was being driven by Juan Bernardo Apellaniz Crespo, a 56-year-old man from Nottingham, Maryland. Crespo was traveling northbound on Interstate 55 when his semi-truck left the roadway to the right side of the road.
Juan Bernardo Apellaniz Crespo had a knee-jerk reaction and over-corrected the semi. This caused the truck to overturn in the roadway. Blocking some lanes of traffic in the process.
A 2017 Volvo truck tractor-trailer semi that was being operated by Theresa H. Berres, a 55-year-old woman from Marinette, Wisconsin was traveling behind Crespo. She was unable to stop or avoid the overturned semi-truck and trailer.
With no other choice, Berres ended up hitting the back end of Crespo’s semi-trailer.
When police arrived at the scene to assess the accident, Crespo ended up being transported to a local hospital in the vicinity to receive medical treatment for minor injuries he sustained in the accident.
Berres declined medical treatment at the scene.
Both semi-trucks had to be towed from the scene due to the damage they sustained in the accident. Crespo was cited for the accident, although the actual citation was not listed publicly.
