– Authorities have identified the pedestrian who was fatally struck by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon on an interstate in McClean County.

Fifty-seven-year-old Richard Gaunt Jr., of Morton, died as a result of the crash, which occurred shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday near Carlock, according to the McClean County Coroner’s Office. No other injuries in connection to the incident were available in car accident reports available Wednesday evening.

The Illinois State Police identified Gaunt as a driver of a semi-tractor trailer who had pulled over on Interstate 74 at about 3:20 p.m. According to car accident reports, he was securing a load on his truck.

Authorities said a driver of a pickup truck, who was not identified in car accident reports, left the roadway and struck Gaunt. Troopers did not say whether the other driver suffered any injuries as a result of the incident.

Gaunt was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck just before 4 p.m. Tuesday. An autopsy was conducted by the McClean County Coroner’s Office.

“Preliminary autopsy opinion indicates that Mr. Gaunt died of multiple blunt injuries sustained as a pedestrian struck by a pickup truck,” Coroner Kathy Yoder wrote in a press release.

The incident remains under investigation by the coroner’s office and the Illinois State Police. Authorities have not said what they believe led the pickup truck driver to leave the roadway and strike Gaunt. No charges or citations have been announced in connection to the incident.
