Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of deaths in Illinois and the United States. They occur for reasons bordering on human error, unforeseen objects on the roadway, and intervening circumstances. These reasons also cover speeding, reckless driving, driving under the influence of drugs or (and) alcohol, distracted driving by texting, eating, or calling, and wrong-way driving.

Other causes of vehicle crashes are tailgating, animal sighting, manufacturer’s defects, underlying medical conditions, adverse road conditions, and adverse weather conditions like rain, snow, and fog. These factors are avoidable if drivers practice safe road behaviors, and follow safety tips and obey traffic rules and regulations.

Safety tips for drivers include maintaining the speed limit of each roadway, obeying stop and turn signs, and traffic lights, yielding to other road users, and avoiding distractions. Additionally, avoid drinking and driving and other harmful and unsafe road behaviors.
