A woman lost her life and her daughter was injured in a hit-and-run accident that occurred in the Near North neighborhood on Monday. The deceased was identified by the police as Zoraleigh Ryan, 55 as per the accident reports.
According to the details shared by the Chicago police, the incident occurred on the East Hubbard Street on Monday night. Ryan and her daughter were walking at the intersection of the East Hubbard Street and State Street when a vehicle hit both of them.
The driver of the SUV that hit them came out of his vehicle. He then looked at the women who were lying on the ground. Then he went back to his car, continued to drive east on the East Hubbard Street. The driver then took a U-turn and came back to the site of the crash, hitting Zoraleigh Ryan a second time. This time the vehicle dragged her body several feet.
The driver then drove away before returning to the scene of the accident a third time. By this time, the authorities had been notified of the accident and the police were on the lookout for the vehicle. An officer spotted the vehicle which led to a pursuit but the suspect somehow got away.
Zoraleigh Ryan died on the scene of the accident. Her daughter sustained non-critical injuries and was taken to the Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She was subsequently released after treatment.
The suspect involved in the crash, aged 25, later walked into the Albany Park District Station of the Chicago police. He sought to report that his vehicle had been stolen but was taken into custody as per the latest accident reports.
