An 18-year-old Crest Hill teenager lost her life early Thursday morning, September 17th, following a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 355 in Lockport Township, Illinois. The Will County Coroner’s Office said that Zyane Williams crashed her car into a concrete barrier.
The teenager died in the emergency room of Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox at 2:14 a.m. The car accident report released by the Illinois State Police District 15 placed Williams behind the wheel of a vehicle southbound on the interstate at milepost 4.5.
The coroner scheduled an autopsy on Thursday to determine the cause and manner of death. There will also be a toxicology test. The investigation into what caused the victim to strike the concrete barrier is ongoing, and the ISP will release an update once they have more information.
According to the Center for Disease Control, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States. 2017 statistics from the agency showed that about 300,000 teenagers were treated in hospitals’ emergency departments for crash-related injuries.
Over two thousand teens died that year from traffic accidents, meaning about six teens aged between 16 and 19 passed away daily. Male teenagers within that age bracket are more likely to crash than the female.
Teens within that age group are nearly three times more likely to have a motor vehicle accident than people 20 years and above. To this end, teenage drivers must follow preventive measures for their safety and obey traffic rules and regulations.
