Two men were killed and a woman gravely injured Monday evening in a head-on crash Monday evening in Oceana County, authorities reported Tuesday.
Josue Morales, 20, of Hart, and his passenger, Enrique Guajardo, 23, of Donna, Texas, were pronounced dead at the scene of the fiery collision, according to the Oceana County Sheriff’s Department. Car accident reports state Vicki Branch, the driver of the other vehicle involved in the wreck, was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Authorities said Morales at about 5:15 p.m. Monday lost control of his vehicle while attempting to pass another driver on North 176th Avenue near Pentwater. Morales’ vehicle went off the roadway and he overcorrected, crossing into the oncoming lane of traffic, according to car accident reports.
Morales then struck a vehicle driven by Branch head-on, deputies said. Morales’ vehicle reportedly was soon engulfed by flames.
The crash occurred between Jackson and Rossel Lake roads, authorities said.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced both Morales and Guajardo dead at the scene. Branch, who, according to car accident reports, had to be extracted from her vehicle at great personal risk to first responders, was transported via helicopter to a Grand Rapids hospital.
The incident remains under investigation by officials from the Oceana County Sheriff’s Department. It’s unclear from information released so far whether deputies suspect other factors, such as speed, intoxication or inattentive driving, might have contributed to the incident.
