A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal crash that occurred around 10 p.m. on Sunday at 5900 Scott Street in Houston.

According to reports, he is 68-year-old James D. Anderson. Police have charged him with driving while intoxicated.

The victim of the crash is a 59-year-old woman whose name has not yet been released. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is verifying her identity.

Her family may seek the services of a pedestrian accident lawyer.

Sergeant J. Uribe and Officer J. Romo of the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division said Anderson was heading north in a gold Volvo S-60 when he struck the woman who was walking in the same direction.

Paramedics took the victim to Ben Taub General Hospital. She was in critical condition, and she passed away at the hospital on Monday.

Meanwhile, police determined that Anderson was intoxicated. He was charged with driving while intoxicated before the woman died. Upgraded charges are now possible.

The victim’s name will be published in subsequent accident reports.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, someone is hurt or killed in an alcohol-related crash every 20 minutes.

A person can be arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated if they have a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or more. They can also be deemed intoxicated if they are impaired because of drugs or alcohol regardless of their BAC.

Punishment depends on the number of convictions the driver has recorded.

A first offense is punishable by a fine of up to $2,000, up to 180 days in jail. DWI accidents that result in death attract much stiffer penalties.
