Michael Hughes Injured in Texas State Highway 73 Crash

A Beaumont native, Micheal Hughes, got injured in an accident on Wednesday, February 19th. The accident happened on the eastbound lanes of Texas 73 west of Taylor Bayou in Port Arthur.

According to authorities, the crash which occurred at about 1 p.m. saw Hughes, who was driving a 2020 Toyota truck hit Ferrer Perez Maidley from behind. The latter was driving a dump truck heading east, and the rear-ended hit left him with minor injuries.

The driver of the Toyota suffered significant trauma when he hit the dump truck. He got taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital while the less injured man got transported to a local hospital.

The road was closed off for 1.5 miles within the accident radius, leading to heavy traffic. It got reopened after investigators finished their preliminary findings.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the cause of the crash. So far, it has not shared any of its findings, but the driver’s impairment does not seem to be a factor.

Rear-end collisions are not uncommon in Texas. It often results in fatalities and life-threatening injuries that can limit a person’s way of life.

Some of the injuries include whiplash, disconnection of the spinal cord, back injuries, and paralysis. Drivers can also suffer seat belt injuries when the airbag dislodges, depending on the force of the accident.

The types of injuries caused by airbag dislodgement are fractures to the arms, wrists, skull, face, and the ribcage. It also leads to the driver slipping in and out of consciousness.

The best way for drivers to prevent accidents is to drive safely. They should keep a considerable distance between vehicles, and drive at the prescribed speech.
