18-year-old Valencia Nichols of 300-block of Persimmon Lane and four people survived a fiery car crash in Oswego, Illinois, with injury on Tuesday, June 23rd. In a press release by the Oswego Police Department, officials said that the crash happened at approximately 9:35 p.m. in the area of 1150 Route 25.
The car accident report showed that the preliminary investigation uncovered that Nichols was driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser northbound on the roadway when she attempted to pass another car. The act caused the victim to lose control of the vehicle and veer off the road, proceed down a hill, and strike a tree.
A Kendall County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant heard a call about the accident on the scanner and arrived at the scene to find the Chrysler on fire with Nichols and her four passengers trapped inside. Deputies successfully put out the fire and extricated the teenager and the other occupants from the vehicle.
The medics transported them to local hospitals for treatment and took three out of the five to regional hospitals due to the severity of their injuries. The police cited Nichols for reckless driving, passing a no-passing zone, and improper lane usage. She will appear in court on August 11th.
The accident led to the closure of Route 25 for approximately three and one-half hours to allow investigators to carry out a reconstruction of the crash site. The incident remains under investigation, and the police will not release the passengers’ names at this time.
