A 15-year-old boy will be charged with murder in connection with the single-car wreck that claimed the life of 14-year-old Shakayla Hill in Macon, GA.
The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Monday when the car ran a red light and a deputy tried to make a traffic stop.
Sheriff David Davis said the driver sped down Napier Avenue, lost control of the vehicle when they got to Habersham Avenue and hit a tree.
The car flipped and took down a power line, ejecting the driver and four passengers, including Hill, from the vehicle.
Davis said the boy is facing a number of charges including felony murder.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said the Nissan Sentra was reported stolen on February 12 and the driver will also face charges in this regard.
The authorities said officers found two semi-automatic pistols in the car. One of them, a 9mm Smith & Wesson, was reported stolen by someone in Monroe County.
Meanwhile, two unidentified passengers fled the scene and Davis said they continue to look for them.
The sheriff said Hill was a victim of someone who was trying to escape law enforcement and the fatal accident could have been avoided.
He noted that running a red light would have resulted in a ticket or simply a warning, but the driver opted to run away and this led to the tragedy.
Hill attended Howard Middle School. Spokesperson for the school system Stephanie Hartley said counselors would be provided to help students and staff with the grieving process.
