A 27-year-old Chatsworth resident died after being hit by a car in northern Whitfield County.
According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report, Joshua Chase Allen was walking across State Route 3 (Highway 41) near Rock Hill Road in Atlanta when he was struck by a Nissan Sentra. The accident occurred around 10:47 p.m.
The report said Allen was wearing dark clothes and there was a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. An opened Budweiser beer can was spotted next to the areas of impact.
The unnamed driver reportedly said she didn’t see anything before making contact and she didn’t even know what she hit.
A witness at a nearby home told authorities Allen had been drinking when he left that location and headed towards State Route 3.
The victim was transported to Hamilton Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
According to his obituary, Allen loved skateboarding and spending time with friends and family.
A memorial service will be held on February 21.
Pedestrian fatalities have been occurring more frequently in Georgia in recent years even though overall traffic deaths have declined.
In 2018, 261 pedestrians died on the state’s road, eight more than in the previous year. Over the five-year period ending in 2018, there was a 60 percent increase in pedestrian fatalities.
This is according to figures compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the 2018 Fatal Motor Vehicle Crashes: Overview.
Since they have nothing to protect them, pedestrians suffer catastrophic or fatal injuries when they are struck.
