According to Georgia State Patrol officials, two drivers were involved in a fatal accident on Monday evening, February 24, near Stephens County. One of the drivers, who was critically injured, was identified as Habersham Central High School (“HCHS”) student-athlete Hadden Carswell. The other driver died at the scene. That individual’s name has not yet been released. No passengers were traveling in either vehicle.
Habersham County dispatched emergency responders to the scene just after 6 p.m. after receiving a 911 call. According to officials, both vehicles were leaking fuel when emergency responders arrived. Both drivers were trapped inside their vehicles.
Habersham County Emergency Service Battalion Matt Ruark reported that while the team was extricating the victims, one was pronounced dead at the scene. Carswell underwent emergency surgery after he was transported by EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
The investigation into the accident by the Georgia State Patrol is ongoing. All areas of distracted driving will be investigated, as well as weather speed or weather contributed to the event. At this time, the cause of the crash is unknown. Weather conditions were reported to be rainy and foggy.
This is the fourth HCHS student in the months involved in a serious vehicular accident. In November 2019, three students were involved in a wreck on their way to school. One died in that accident.
