Suspected Georgia Avenue Hit-and-Run Driver, Jesse Shackelford Taken Into Custody

The police in North Augusta, Georgia, spent the better part of Monday, March 9th, on a search for a suspected hit-and-run driver. The latter fled the scene of an accident that occurred on Georgia Avenue.

The North Augusta Department of Public Safety later identified him as Jesse Shackelford, and about 9 p.m., they found and took him into custody. The accident the man was involved in occurred at about 3 p.m.

The initial police report showed that Shackelford was driving on Georgia Avenue near Observatory Avenue in a red truck when for unknown reasons, he struck a gray vehicle. The suspect then took off and drove as far as Summerhill before stopping.

Next, Shackelford came down from his vehicle, and fled on foot, causing the police to commence a search. He left behind some personal items in his car that helped the NADPS in identifying him.

The NADPS also stated that they have some questions about the items found in the truck for Shackelford. The police have not said what they are charging the man with, or if the other driver was injured.

A hit-and-run is a severe offense in Georgia, and the courts frown at it. The law of the state provides that those involved in an accident that results in a death, injury, or damage to property should stop immediately at the scene or the nearest possible place.

The driver should give his or her details to the police, present a driver’s license upon request, and render help to anyone that is injured. The driver must remain at the scene during preliminary investigation and only leave when the police clear him or her to do so.
