Hit-and-Run Driver, Derrick Powell, Arrested Following Heated Police Chase in Effingham

A suspected DUI motorist has been detained by the Effingham County authorities after hitting another vehicle and fleeing the crash scene with a troop of police patrol cars in his trail. The incident took place in the afternoon of Wednesday, March 18, and resulted in the wreckage of no fewer than five vehicles.

A spokesperson for the County Sheriff’s Office, Gena Sullivan, noted that the suspect was initially sought for colliding with a Ford Explorer at the intersection of McCall and Blue Jay roads at about 3:15 pm and driving off in his Crown Victoria, notwithstanding the damage caused to the crash victims.

Authorities of the Effingham County tracked down the traffic offender and caught up with him before he could escape. However, the Crown operator failed to pull over upon police demands, leading them in a heated pursuit instead.

Although the culprit swerved on occasions to avoid some obstacles during the chase, he struck a set of stop sticks in his path, and ran into a few other vehicles, including two trucks and a sheriff’s patrol car.

When the fleeing motorist was eventually intercepted on Ga. 21 at S. Laurel St, Springfield, he was driving on a rim, with severe damages to other vehicle parts.

It was determined that the driver, who has been identified as Derrick Powell, was under the influence at the time of the incident.

The 40-year-old was booked into the County Jail, faced with charges of fleeing from police, drunken and reckless driving, hit-and-run, open container, probation violation, speeding, assaulting law enforcement, and driving while licence revoked.
