A court sitting in the state of Georgia, on Tuesday, March 17th, sentenced Julia Maria Bell, 50, to five years in a state prison for stealing from her elderly client, name withheld. According to the prosecutors, the woman worked as a caregiver for a Kennesaw lady between 2016 and 2017.
The authorities were alerted to her theft when the older woman’s relatives discovered irregularities with her finances. A follow-up investigation uncovered that the caregiver was using credit cards belonging to her client to make purchases for herself.
The older woman had suffered a stroke, and Bell lived with her in her home. The caregiver had access to her client’s finances, which made her theft easier, and she stole nearly $20 000 from the woman.
Bell was convicted earlier this month, and at her sentencing, the court ordered the woman to pay over $19 000 to her client to make restitution.
Caregivers are people who take care of the sick and elderly either in nursing facilities or in the comfort of their client’s homes. Two essential qualities define a caregiver, and they are a compassionate heart and home care experience.
A caregiver must be selfless and put his or her client’s needs first. The person must have a loving heart, and continuously show unconditional kindness to the person he or she looks after.
A caregiver must always behave in a respectful and supportive manner, have an empathic and patient spirit, and be teachable. The person should also have a good understanding of the client’s needs and manage the day-to-day activities of the patient diligently.
