A family friend has publicly identified the 2-year-old boy killed when he was struck by a vehicle Saturday in Scottsdale.
John Warren Mahlke, the son of Sarah and Patrick Mahlke, died at the scene of the crash, organizers posted on a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the family. The effort has raised nearly $60,000 in just more than one day.
Police, who as of Monday afternoon still had not publicly identified the boy or the driver involved in the crash, previously reported that a 28-year-old woman was driving near Hayden and Palm roads Saturday when she lost control or her vehicle and went over a curb. A boy was struck and fatally injured, authorities said.
Police are investigating the crash.
According to the GoFundMe page, the family was headed to Arizona to attend spring training “because John Warren showed joy and love for baseball.” The family also reportedly “planned this to be the beginning of a long family tradition.”
“Sarah and Pat will be utilizing these funds to help with taking John Warren home to California from Arizona (moving him across state lines involves a great deal of red tape), buying their family burial plot so that they are all together (an unimaginable thought), and funeral expenses,” organizers wrote in the GoFundMe post.
