Jorge Serrano Faces Charges for Tucson DUI and Hit-and-Run Accident

The police in Tucson, Arizona, on Wednesday, March 18th, arrested and charged the man who caused an accident in the city last month. Jorge Serrano, 57, is facing multiple felony charges for causing an accident while impaired and fleeing the scene.

The Tucson Police Department said the accident Serrano perpetrated occurred on February 8th. Witnesses told the police that the man, who was driving through a residential area at high speed, struck a car that was pulling out of an apartment complex.

Serrano was traveling in a pickup, and he rammed into the other vehicle from behind. He fled the scene without stopping to render help to the driver of the car, or check the extent of the damage caused.

The driver of the wrecked car, whom police later identified as a 71-year-old female, Rosa Diarte, was taken to the hospital for treatment of severe injuries. The woman has been in the hospital since, but she sadly passed away on Monday, March 16th, and the police got informed.

Diarte died from her injuries, hence the arrest and charges against Serrano. At the time of this report, there’s no information on whether the man would be released on bail.

A DUI and a hit-and-run are severe offenses in Arizona. A first-time offender when there’s no death or injury may escape jail time, and go away with a fine, but when either of the two occurs, the person will go to prison, and also pay a fine.

In some cases, the driving privileges of the offender will get suspended, and the court in civil matters will ask the person to make restitution.
