Police: Man Could Face More Charges In Tucson Wreck That Killed Rosa Diarte

Police this week released more information about a hit-and-run crash in Tucson last month that left a 71-year-old woman fatally injured.

Rosa M. Diarte died from injuries sustained in the Feb. 5 crash at the intersection of East 29th Street and South Mountain View Avenue. At least one other person was injured in the two-vehicle collision.

First responders were called to the intersection Feb. 8 to investigate a crash that resulted in serious injuries. Witnesses later told investigators that a speeding car rear-ended another vehicle, pushing it into a streetlight.

The driver of the first vehicle then fled the scene, according to police. Emergency personnel treated Diarte, the second vehicle’s driver, and a passenger who sustained minor injuries.

Diarte later died. Investigators said they determined excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash.

Authorities said they located the first vehicle a few minutes later and completed a traffic stop. The driver, Jorge Serrano, 57, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a collision, police reported.

This week, officials from the medical examiner’s office confirmed that Diarte died as a result of injuries sustained in the wreck. Authorities said Serrano likely will face additional charges as a result.
