The North Cobb High School fraternity was in mourning on Monday following the death of one of its students in a car crash on Friday evening.

Cobb police and the school’s principal confirmed that the deceased was Andre Cordero, 17, of Acworth, Georgia.

Police say the teenager was turning left out of a driveway at 1640 South Cobb Drive after 9 p.m.  The private residence is less than half a mile north away from Nickajack Creek.

According to a police report, when Cordero pulled onto South Cobb Drive, he crossed paths with a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer that was heading south.

The Trailblazer struck the left side of Cordero’s 2007 Hyundai Tiburon, killing him and harming his passenger James Rosales, also 17, of Kennesaw.

Rosales was taken to Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries. Meanwhile, the driver of the Trailblazer, Lisa James, 38, of Powder Spring was transported to Kennestone with minor injuries.

Sergeant Wayne Delk of the Cobb County Police Department said the crash was still under investigation.

North Cobb Principal Matt Moody told parents he decided to inform the school community about Cordero’s death after talking to the eleventh grader’s family.

In a letter, he said he wanted all the students to have the same information, so each teacher was provided with the facts to read to their class during the first period.

District spokeswoman Nan Kiel said the wreck was tragic and the district was saddened to learn about Cordero’s death.

She said staff would be available on campus to support the school community at this difficult time.
