Athens Vehicle Vs. Pedestrian Crash Claims the Life of Carl Lyle Freeman

The City of Athens, Georgia, recorded an accident, following the death of a pedestrian who was hit and tragically killed on West Broad Street on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred near a FedEx store located down the street on March 4.

According to a statement released to the press by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, the car accident victim met his end while trekking across the street, northbound at about 9:30 pm.

A 2001 Ford Ranger truck that was moving west on West Broad Street at the same time fiercely collided with the pedestrian, knocking him down.

The crash victim, who died on the scene, was identified by the Athens-Clark County’s authorities as Carl Lyle Freeman, a 78-year-old man from Greensboro, Georgia.

The release confirmed that the rain was pouring heavily at the time of the incident, and the street was plunged in partial darkness when the accident took place.

Following investigations into the vehicle versus pedestrian collision, the police department discovered that the victim was heading out of the FedEx store towards Cadence Bank located right across the street and had successfully crossed six lanes of travel when the crash took place.

It is unclear if the operator of the Ford ranger truck, whose name was withheld, would face charges related to the crash, but investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause of the tragic incident.

The fatal crash recorded on the rainy Wednesday evening marks the third tragic accident the City of Athens, Georgia, has been plagued with this year, as revealed by the city’s police department.
