A two-vehicle collision on Saturday, March 7th, in Athens, Georgia, left a man dead and a woman injured. The authorities identified them as Willie James Butts, 49, and April Campbell, 33, both of Athens.
The fatal collision occurred on US Highway 29, north of the Georgia Highway 72 intersection. The Athens-Clarke Police Department, in its report, stated that they got a call about the accident at about 8:12 p.m.
Butts and Campbell were both traveling south in a 2001 Nissan Maxima as passengers. The driver of the car, Lucy Mae Whitlock, 66, made a U-turn on the road but failed to yield to a 2006 Kia Sorento, heading north.
The Kia, driven by Phillip Stevenson Dennis, 61, of Athens, hit the Nissan on the right passenger side, and the impact left Butts with extensive internal injuries. He was taken to the hospital by paramedics but later succumbed to his wounds.
Campbell was taken to the hospital for treatment of a broken arm and collapsed lung. The police are still investigating the crash, but for now, drugs or alcohol do not seem to factor in it.
No charge has been filed, and drivers have been advised to avoid distractions while behind the wheel and to yield the road to other motorists when necessary. Also, drivers should maintain the right speed for various roadways and take turns slowly.
Georgia traffic law provides that drivers should not exceed 65 miles per hour on an urban interstate or a multi-lane divided highway. 70 mph for rural interstate, 35 mph on an unpaved country road, and 55 mph for other areas.
