The man who lost his life after the cab of his truck caught fire in a crash on Friday has been identified, Georgia accident reports confirm.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper Christopher Ashdown said he is James Daniel Owens, a 58-year-old resident of Anthony, Florida.
The accident occurred on I-95 around 11:30 p.m.
Ashdown said Owens was driving in a southerly direction near mile marker 79 when he struck a guard rail. He said the vehicle burst into flames, possibly because its side fuel tank ruptured.
No information was released about what caused Owens to leave the roadway.
When fire officers arrived, they found that the cab was fully engulfed, and the fire was spreading to the trailer that was carrying beer.
Liberty County Fire Services Chief Brian Darby reported that while his firefighters were able to quickly bring the blaze under control, Owens did not survive.
Following the crash, the two left lanes of I-95 were closed as crews put out the fire.
Police could release more information about the cause of the accident in future accident reports.
In 2018, 1,504 people died in traffic accidents in Georgia. This represented a 2.3 percent decrease from the previous year in which 1,540 people were killed.
This was the largest drop in the state’s traffic fatalities since 2012 when the state recorded 1,192 deaths. This was 34 less than the 1,226 recorded in 2011.
Some of these fatal crashes result from the negligence of someone other than the victims. In these cases, families can seek compensation for their losses.
